Points Galore!

 Don't ever tempt the Universe!
I know better!

Mankind's Deepest-Ever View of the Universe
The eXtreme Deep Field, or XDF

But I did the day before yesterday,
and here was the proof that I shouldn't
when I peeked out my bedroom blinds this morning.

VoilĂ

Points galore!

Muley Bucks!

There at the top of the golf course were three bucks!

Now understand, I have never spotted
just the boys hanging out together,
and here they were!
Kowabunga!

I ran for my camera, glasses, and kitchen step stool.
I leaned against my second story window,
while standing on my tippy-toes on the step stool
to get above some pesky tree branches.

Do you think those guys would cooperate
by bunching together and slowing down?
Not!

No matter how I twisted and turned,
I couldn't get the three of them in one shot;
and, even zoomed to the max,
I couldn't get a sharp shot!
#%*$^&!

"Come a little bit closer, you're my kind of man,"
I whispered,
as the deer began to move along the fence.

That was my buck from the park
last November.
I'd only seen him a few times since.

My friend Julie and I are still
trying to figure out his point count.

Are those or are those not
eye guards or brow tines?
See more of him in my blog post
                               Along Piney Creek.

Wasn't it just the day before yesterday
that I was struggling to understand
the crazy count system for points on a muley buck,
and I wrote in my blog:
"And I am not going anywhere near asymmetrical point counts!"

"Take that!" says the Universe.

How do you count the points on a buck with a busted rack?
I hadn't seen this one before.

And the third one had no antler at all on his left side!
How do you count that?

But this one I knew.

He'd lost his antler in the rut last November.

Terry, Barb, and I had spotted him while walking in the park.

Don't let this little doe's backward glance fool you.
None of the guys were having any luck this November day,
including this buck I photographed on Wednesday.
See more of him in my blog post Hungry Neighbors.

Come on pretty boy!
"So big and so strong.
Come a little bit closer!"

Rats!  He ran around the front of the house!

But this one didn't!
Right under my bedroom window at the corner of the deck!

Now I'm Busted!

Jump into my clothes.
Jump into Terry's shoes.
Grab my Viking hat complete with runes.
Sneak out the front door.
Hope the neighbors aren't up!

D-A-R-N!
They're around back again!
Slip around the side.

See you 'round!
Maybe I'll know how to count your points by then!

And since I haven't been able to get
this song out of my head all day:

 Le voilĂ  !

  1. Great post, Fundy!
The last pictures are perfect and I can image your excitement at managing them so well!
    And... I love your humour!
Not easy indeed to count points if they are irregular, especially if one whole antler is missing! LOL!!!
    Cheers, keep well!

    1. Thanks, Noushka!
I'm so glad that you enjoyed the post. And I was excited and having fun. Terry had to do an intervention to get me away from my camera and my computer.
He took me off to see the movie "Zero Dark Thirty" which was phenomenal and then to lunch.
No deer this morning, but we're headed to the mountains to meet some friends from California.
I really enjoyed your post about your blind from which you observe birds. What an amazing set-up! I'm still trying to decide what camera I'm going to upgrade to. Your photos are exquisite and inspiring!
Enjoy the rest of your day, and may next week be great!

  2. Hahaha...love your post! You have so much energy. I can just feel the excitement of all this, and how you must have been bouncing around trying to get these beautiful shots. But I understand.I'd be doing the same thing :) Wishing you a lovely Sunday!

I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I'm sort of known for my bounce and energy!
It's serendipitous when gorgeous guys like this walk walk right into your yard.
You have a lovely Sunday too!

    1. Hey Barb! I'm back after a fun time in Black Hawk! I'm now reading a history of the gold rush in Central City/Black Hawk. It's really interesting. Can't wait to see you in March!

  4. Hello Louise,
Hope you are doing well. Aren't they beautiful and so close, beautiful shots also. We get to see deer in a distance in forest not far from here. Once, we were really early and came face to face with an enormous stag, who just crossed the road very slowly just looking at us. It was a mystical moment! We know to drive slowly at that particular bit, as a few people have hit wild boar there and the cars are more damaged!
    Have a good week.

    1. Hi Ivan,
Thank you for the encouraging comment - and yes the deer are beautiful. Mystical is the perfect word to describe what it is like to see such amazing animals. I'm sorry that it has taken me this long to respond. Terry and I have been up in the mountains. I just got back from the grocery store with celery and a celery root (which I have never used before!), and I'm going to make your celery soup this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes. I hope your week is going well.

    1. Thanks, Audrey! Yes, I was excited. This was a rare treat. I get such fun out of following this little herd. I can distinguish among the four males that I know of now. It will be interesting to see how their antlers grow in after they lose them sometime in February. I don't know if they will follow the same pattern or not. I'm sorry I was so late responding, but Terry and I were out of town. Enjoy what's left of your week!

    1. Thank you, Terry! It was tons of fun. Hey, I read on Jim's blog that you were a cartographer with the USGS. That is way cool! I used to do field mapping in Eastern Canada for a couple of Toronto hard rock companies, then subsurface mapping for some oil companies. Have a great rest of the week!

  7. Dem bucks have dee moves, don't they!

I'm still in awe at how close these beautiful animals are to your houses. And the amount of deer....so many! Well, Ron, it's time to accept that there ae different things in different places...that's what makes the world go round.

With all that fully realized....I really enjoyed seeing the deer up close and personal...the colours blending into your environment...can't tell me Mother Nature isn't in charge here.

    Great post Louise!

  8. Hi Ron! It's always good to hear from you!
I'm just getting back to you now, because Terry and I were up in the mountains in Black Hawk playing black jack and some other things- also meeting and spending time with friends of ours from San Diego, California. A great time was had by all.
It is pretty amazing how well the muleys match their habitat. Sometimes the only way to spot them is to see the silhouette if their big ears against their background.
I just realized where there is a place nearby where I can get up close and personal with some beautiful ponderosa pines without going into the reserve. So very soon I'm going to go to kestrel point and take some pp pics and do a post on them.
I hope you, Jim, and Sophie are having a good week.

    1. Question......for you to solve!

I put an album of pictures on my FB page today of the sights Sophie and I saw on the horizon from the beach today. Can you name the misty ethereal effect that was coming off the water? I don't know what it is and thought you might!

      Thanks
      Ron

    2. Will do, Ron!
      Tomorrow!
      It's way past my bedtime.
I am an utter failure at resolutions.
My body no longer knows what time zone it's in.
      Too much Iron Butterfly!

Iron Butterfly? Ouchie...you needs some calming sounds...try Peter Halpern...really helps with the blogger's mind and creativity! We have CD's but he's on YouTube too!!!

  9. I feel better, Ron! Thanks!
Right now I'm running on about three hours sleep, but I'm off to the bookstore for coffee and books. Then Sam's Club and Wal-Mart.
I'm really curious about those waterspout thingies you photographed. They look like dust devils made with mist. I'm going to see what I can find out.
Later on a nap before Friday Night Date Night!
I'll get back on track with Facebook and everything else. I was really quite sick after the new year, but I'm way better now - just trying to catch up on everything that has stacked up on top of being out of town.
My Christmas tree is still standing there looking beautiful while Terry glares at it and gives me The Look! He's also giving The Look to my ailing poinsettia!
Oh well! Have a great day. Meanwhile Iron Butterfly is still rocking the house!
    Belly rubs to Sophie!
