Under the Canopy

A visit to Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas is always fascinating.
You never know what to expect under the canopy.

Well over a million visitors visit Fremont Street each month
to experience the sights, sounds, and tastes, from zip lining
to live music, to the bars, restaurants, and casinos lining the street.

Many come to see spectacular light shows displayed
on the world's largest video screen lining the underside of the canopy.
Viva Vision's screen is comprised of 12.5 million LED lamps.
The shows awe watchers with high-resolution images and concert-quality sound.  vegasexperience.com

But as mesmerizing as these sights are,
I enjoy the endless people show on the street even more.
A parade of humanity strolls, dances, runs, begs, and entertains
twenty-four seven.

This time I spotted a subject I've photographed around the world
but had never crossed paths with on Fremont Street:
a photographer seeking the perfect spot for an iconic photo,
with a tired bride and groom trailing behind.

  1. Sure looks to be a busy spot. Seeing all the people go to and fro would be interesting indeed. They have to find that perfect spot that says love I guess. Maybe they should have asked a nearby Elvis?

    1. Hey, Pat! All the Elvises were still asleep, and it was a chilly mid-morning. I often feel sorry for the brides and grooms I've seen traipsing behind a photographer in destination spots. Have a good one!

  2. They look beat all right.
That must be new from the last time I visited. Be cool to see.

    1. Happy Friday morning, Alex! You see a lot of brides and grooms in the Strip hotels, but this was a first downtown. I found the juxtaposition of families strolling along, friends chatting, young women dressed as showgirls hoping to pose with tourists for tips, and a tired bride and groom an unusual, but somehow ordinary, puzzle piece of in the picture of humanity around the world. Have a good one!

    1. Hi, Debra! I felt bad for them too. I've seen similar scenes over and over, often with the bride in heels. I hope that they got the photos they wanted. I'm not sure if people still say that your wedding day is the most important day of your life. I tend to think of it as a very stressful day in your life. I hope they had lots of fun later and many good days unfolding in front of them. Enjoy your weekend!

  4. We were there 2 years ago and thought it was such a neat part of Vegas. Good Charlotte was doing a free concert then and it was a bit packed in that area. People watching is good to do on Freemont Street. Such a lively bunch of characters come out at night there. I bet that bride and groom were happy when their shoot was over. They do look exhausted!

    1. You are so right, Theresa ~ When there is a good live band playing, Fremont Street can be packed! I never tire of the show! Have a great weekend!

  5. I’ve only been to Vegas once but Fremont street was an experience. The whole strip with all the different casinos was interesting. A lot for the eye to take in.

    1. Vegas is sensory overload, and I have to have alone time and sleep time to really enjoy it. I've been to Vegas countless times, because it completely takes your mind off everything else. Have a great weekend!

  6. The whole area would be way too busy for me to enjoy, hustle and bustle, and the what should be a Happy Couple, well I imagine after the end of that day they would just be plain thankful it was all done. Yes, I could sit and watch everyone walk past, and see so many different faces, races, dresses or not, singles, couples and families. I am sure you really enjoyed the time there, and what a great set of maps.

    1. I'm so glad that you enjoyed the maps, Jean! One thing I especially enjoy about Fremont Street is that everything is close by, and it's steps to move from one place to another. On the Strip you walk, and walk, and walk, and trudge, and trudge, and trudge. Wishing yo and Hugh a good weekend. I hope Boris isn't lonely.

  7. I used to shoot weddings. No way I would torture a couple like that.

The canopy is beautiful. Reminds me of Christmas at Disney.

    1. Hi, Diane! Good for you! I've seen brides on Waikiki climbing over rocks in their wedding dresses, and other crazy things. I've seen dozens and dozens of shows on the canopy, and I've never seen one I didn't enjoy, especially with the sound effects and music. Have a great weekend!

  8. It's been a while since I've been on Fremont Street. I used to enjoy staying there--but we skipped it last time (normally I am flying into Vegas only because it is cheaper and then renting a car and heading to SW Utah).

    1. SW Utah ~ You are talking God's country, Jeff! I can apply that to almost all of Utah. I, too, have flown through Vegas to get cheaper flights, especially to Nova Scotia. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

    1. Hi, Adam! I hope that you and Daisy are having a great weekend. We had ice fog and snow late yesterday evening ~ ugh, especially since I had to drive in it. I was hoping a deer wouldn't jump out of the fog onto the road. Vegas isn't much better, though. It snowed there twice during the last week. I hope that things are warmer where you are!

  10. That street is alive day or night with interesting happenings. I think the bride and groom should have gone by the dancing waters and called it a day.

    1. Thanks, Stacy! We had a nice warm day yesterday and part of today, but tonight we are expecting three to six inches of snow. At least we don't have to venture out ~ I have one stocked larder. Wishing you a great weekend, my talented friend!
