I Kid You Not!

On Monday afternoon big slobby raindrops, on the verge of turning to snow,
splatted my car as I drove home from an appointment.
As I climbed up Inspiration Drive, the rain thickened to snow,
huge fat flakes setting up for a heavy spring snowstorm.

Give me a break, I silently groaned.  It's May 20th!
But no break was to be had;
by the time I arrived home and hustled into the warmth, the snow was pelting down.

By bedtime the wet heavy snow began to cover everything,
silent and surreal on this late May night.

Nothing moved outside.
My Doorstep Bunny had ventured out, looked around,
and retreated back under the front steps.

I retreated quickly too.
This was a great day to be retired and hunkered down by the fire!

Our house sits on a ridge and is just shy of 6,000 feet (1829 meters) in elevation;
because of our elevation, we received a good six inches of snow.
So much for my theory that we were safe from snow after Mother's Day!

Curious, I checked the weather records for the Denver area.
This was the latest 3-inch-plus snowfall since May 29, 1975.
Furthermore, this is only the fifth time that three inches of snow or more
has fallen this late in the season since 1882 ~ 137 years!

As I write this, the trees have dropped their heavy shawls,
and green is poking through the melting snow.

Tomorrow the sun will come out and burn away whatever snow remains.
If we move to the Nevada desert, I shall miss the beauty of snow
and the craziness of springtime in the Rockies.

    1. I prefer snow over heat anytime, Alex. Terry is the one who doesn't like snow. I hope that it cools down soon at your place.

    1. Hugs, Baili! I had to get my winter pyjamas out, after packing them away for the summer. And I had just replaced our flannel sheets with cotton ones. Burrr! We've had our fireplace and furnace back on because it's been freezing in the house. But, I just pile on the sweaters and drink more hot coffee. All the snow is gone. The six inches vanished in less that 24 hours, and now everything is vibrant green. Thanks for all the lovely things you said in your comment!

      I got sidetracked by plumeria and jasmine when I was writing a comment on your post. I meant to compliment you for encouraging your sons to study over their summer break. Education is so important! And I haven't seen Spartacus, but I'll look for it. Have a good one!!!!!

    1. Yes, Martha, the snow is completely gone ~ six inches in under 24 hours, so now everything is really a lush green. Not many flowers though ~ :( Hugs, my friend!

  9. Bah, you can keep it all. 5 times in that many years isn't bad odds though. Still haven't decided if you're moving on down or over or out? Another direction works I suppose. The direction of no snow. Is nice to look at though, as long as it stays there.

    1. Hey, Pat. Oh, we could move tomorrow, if Terry would buy the house I currently like ~ but he wants a good deal. So we're in a holding pattern until a good deal turns up. Haha. Works for me, because I'm in no hurry to move. Have a good one!

  10. That would make me cry this late into the year. I am soooo sick of snow at this point. The late frost we had in April stunted my flower growth this year and put me in an awful funk. It is pretty to look at, but I am so ready for summer. Stay warm, my friend!
