Fundy Does the movies: Gravity

I have just two words
for the movie Gravity:  See it!

For once the Ever-Patient Terry
did not have to be dragged to a space drama.

He, who never goes to a movie
without checking the reviews,
knew that Rotten Tomatoes
gave it a whopping 98% rating.
The E-P was good to go!

I, who loves space dramas and
who never looks at a review
before seeing a movie,
was rearing to go!

Gravity did not disappoint!
It grabbed us in the opening seconds
and carried us on a thrilling ride
to the harrowing closing scene.
It was as if we had lived it.

For the first time ever,
Terry said, "I could see that movie again."

Briefly, the plot is this:
Three astronauts take a routine spacewalk
to service the Hubble Space Telescope.

Extra-vehicular Activity

Houston Mission Control warns the astronauts
that a Russian anti-satellite test has caused
a chain-reaction of destruction,
sending deadly orbital debris their way.
(Kessler syndrome).

They need to abort their Extra-vehicular activity
and return to the space shuttle Explorer immediately.
The debris hits before they can,
and only two astronauts survive the onslaught.

Dr. Ryan Stone is untethered
and tumbling out of control in space.
Astronaut Matt Kowalski must retrieve Stone
with his thruster pack (MMU),
and together they must find a way
to survive alone in space
and cut off from communications with Mission Control.

While George Clooney gives a great performance
as veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski,
Sandra Bullock makes the movie
with her outstanding performance
as medical engineer Ryan Stone.

I have followed the exploration of space
since I was a small child.
I would dearly love to orbit the Earth
and travel to the moon and beyond.
This movie made me feel like I was in space.
The stunning 3D images
highlighted the fragile beauty of the Earth
and the dangerous beauty of black space.

I can hardly begin to imagine the technology
involved in making this movie look so real,
especially the way the actors moved in zero-gravity.

The work began with mapping out the entire movie
using computer-generated animation.
This previsualization determined how the actors performed.

For some scenes, the actors swam through
their movements underwater.

For others, they were suspended from wires
and filmed while puppeteers moved their bodies.

The filmmakers Emmanuel Lubezki and Tim Webber
created a light box
where the actors were suspended
and moved as little as possible.
Meanwhile the set, the lighting, and the cameras
moved around the actors.

In postproduction the live action and
computer-generated animation were combined,
the wires and other apparatus digitally removed,
and more special effects added.
The end result was so real,
I felt I was there too,
weightless in space and fighting for my life.

Just see it!

  1. My Rare One wants to see this movie. I'm more on the fence, not being a Sandra Bullock fan.

    1. Hi Debra! A surprise overnight visitor cut into my blogging replies, but now the dust has settled. I'm not a big Sandra Bullock fan either, but I thought that she was great in "Gravity." Maybe you'll give the movie a try. Terry is usually a pretty good sport about going to movies to humor me, but sometimes he just can't do it. Then off I go solo! Hope you're having a great week!

    1. Hi Ron! I hope things are going well with you, Jim, and SD! We had a surprise overnight visit from Terry's sister on Monday. We are looking forward to going up to Breckenridge to spend the long weekend with her. If I'm remembering correctly, your brother is coming for Canadian Thanksgiving. I hope you have a great time with him. My family has big complicated plans spread from Calgary to Ottawa to the Cove. As for GC ~ I don't get what the big deal is with him ~ I'm more Harrison Ford myself! And SB ~ well I was never a big fan of hers, but I think she was perfect for and in this role. DWTS ~ I was sad to see Bill Nye the Science Guy go. He was a favorite of mine because I was an elementary teacher who used his resources a lot. He was responsible for me making sure I had my kids experience Jimmy Hendrix playing our national anthem every year as part of our American history and government unit. I mean we were supposed to study "The Star-spangled Banner!" Bill Nye had a kid imitating JH in one of his science videos, and my students had no clue who JH was. So I took care of that. I could always work anything into the curriculum! LOL! Have a good one!

    1. Hey Audrey! sorry I'm late responding ~ lots going on the past few days! The movie is amazing ~ I have always wanted to go into space, and I felt like I was really there. The cinematography is ~ I can't even think of an adjective, but it will change the film industry. It was like when the first Star Wars movie hit the screens and brought movies to a new level. Yeah there were a few thinks that you could pick at, but for me they were overwhelmed by the stunning visuals and the feelings I had of being right there! Hope all is well with you, my friend! Take care!

I really enjoyed making the scarves. I knit a lot of hope and love into them. And thank you for undertaking this huge, huge project. I know many people will benefit from all you have done to make this happen. Take care!

  11. I have no TV, so I had not heard of this. Thank you for the review. It sounds terrifying, but being the Trekkie I am and growing up next to an air base, I may just have to chin up and go see this...

    1. Hi SC! You are braver than I am ~ I'm not sure I could go TV-less! The movie was terrifying, yes; but it also was inspiring and a reminder that you can't give up, that if you keep on fighting, you just may make it through something very difficult against all odds. And even if you don't, the fight is better than giving up and lying down. I am such a Trekkie! My dad was sir force for some of my childhood ~ and I got to take a one-week course on space at the Air Force Academy (one of the highlights of my life!!!!!). Hope you're enjoying a great week!
