IWSG: Wednesday, December 4, 2024 ~ A Cliffhanger?

It's the first Wednesday of the month,
the day that members of the
Insecure Writer's Support Group
share their writing struggles
and writing successes
and offer their encouragement
and support to fellow writers.

To visit the IWSG website, click here.

To become a member of the IWSG, click here.

Our wonderful co-hosts who are volunteering today,
along with IWSG Founder Alex J. Cavanaugh are
Stop by their posts and thank them for hosting. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Every month the IWSG announces a question that members can answer
with advice, insight, a personal experience, or a story in their IWSG posts.

Or, the question can inspire members
if they aren't sure what to write about on IWSG Day.

Remember the question is optional.

This month's featured question is:
Do you write cliffhangers at the end of your stories? Are they a turn-off to you as a writer and/or a reader?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Happy December, Everyone!
December is truly a time of festivity around the world,
as Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and Paganism celebrate the holidays.
Christmas (Dec. 25) is one of the biggest global holidays,
a religious day for Christians celebrating the birth of Christ,
with many non-Christians joining in the festivities by giving gifts and feasting.
During Hanukkah (December 18-26) the Jewish people honor
the 2nd century BC rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after it was liberated
from foreign occupation by a small number of Jewish fighters.
Buddhists mark the enlightenment of Siddhartha Gautama,
the historical Buddha, on Bodhi Day (Dec. 8).
And during Yule (Dec. 21-Jan.1), Wiccans and Neo-Pagans
celebrate the winter solstice and the return of longer days.
Wherever you live, whatever your traditions, I hope you have a wonderful month!
Regarding this month's IWSG question, yes I do like cliffhangers,
and my favorites are the ones occurring in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Cliffhangers are what keep me up reading late into the night,
and they often motivate me to buy new books in a series.
It's that compelling need to know!
Typically the type of writing I do does not lend itself to cliffhangers,
but if I can find a way to work one or more in, I include it.
Wishing each of you a fun IWSG Day,
and a big thank you to our awesome co-hosts.
Have a healthy, happy, and creative December!
I'll be visiting around after I exit Cloud Land.
Take care!
Till next time ~
  2. There are a lot of holidays/celebrations packed into this time of the year aren't there. What ever people celebrate (or don't) I hope it is a happy time.
    I don't like cliff hangers. I think they are a cheat.
    1. Sometimes I feel like you, Sue, especially when I have to wait a while for a sequel. I think they can be very effective in chapters within a book. I hope that you are enjoying a good week.
  3. Cliffhangers do have that effect of urging us to buy a new book! I had no idea of Yule and all I knew about that was the Yule Ball in Harry Potter:)
    Happy December!
    The Lord of the Rings worked for me too, but only because I had all the books. :-)
  19. So many ways to celebrate this month indeed depending on beliefs.
    I enjoy a good cliffhanger. If it super random or just a blatant ploy to read the next book, not so much.
  20. Hi, Everyone! I'm home again and ready to visit around. I was so tired yesterday that I crawled in bed and mostly slept until today. I'm having a harder time burning candles at both ends these days ~ lol!
  21. Happy holidays dear Louise to you and Terry!
    having feast with family everyone looks happy so naturally :)
    i just check the meaning of cliffhanger
    i agree that exciting and full of suspense end of any episode or chapter keep one attached to the story firmly
    reminds me my a day when after watching an episode of something like this i asked my father curiously that will hero will stand in the door until next episode and my father laughed loud and explained
    i still enjoy such situations more as thrillers and suspense are my fav .i wonder how difficult it must be for an writer to arrange such situation in every episode
    wishing you more happy full of health and joy days my friend ! thinking of you !
    hugs
    Cliffhangers ? Maybe 2024 isn't the right time to answer this ! .
    In June this year, one of our closest friends had MRSA, and it was worst of all,where it was attacking his eye,, and the consultant warned he could be losing it. Three-day cliffhanger , eye saved, surgery to restore damaged sight next week.
    Instead, check ETA of the next storm, name already ominous. , Eowyn. Can she rip out even more trees than Arwen ?
