On Fremont Street

In late June Terry and I were off to Fremont Street in Downtown Las Vegas,
a destination we enjoy much more than the famous Strip.

It's not that the Strip isn't fabulous.
It's more that Fremont Street is human-sized.
You can easily walk from one end to the other, absorbing all the sights.

On Fremont Street, you never know what you might see.
Day or night, round the clock, it's a never-ending show,
a parade of humanity for avid people watchers.

The oldest continuously operated hotel in Las Vegas opened
at the southeast corner of Main and Fremont streets in 1906.
Today that hotel is known as the Golden Gate Hotel,
but it opened back then to rave reviews as the Nevada Hotel.

The hotel replaced a tent hostelry and was renowned
for its luxurious accommodations and the best food in Las Vegas.
It boasted electrical lighting and the first telephone installed in the city.
Telephone number?  "1" ~ Of course!
Room and board cost $1.00 per day.

The hotel's owner John F. Miller is sitting in the carriage.
The woman in the upstairs window is thought to be Rosa who became Miller's wife.

I'm betting that John, Rosa, and the others in the photo
could never have envisioned the corner of Main and Fremont today.

If you spend several days roaming Fremont Street,
you begin to recognize the regulars: panhandlers, entertainers,
artists, kiosk salespeople, buskers, and security guards.

Millions of visitors have come to Fremont Street since December 14, 1995
to see the Fremont Street Experience on the world's biggest video screen.

Multiple times a night, the spectacular light shows have lit up
the 1,367 foot long canopy with an explosion of movement and color,
accompanied by music on a state-of-the-art, concert-quality sound system.

Currently the Viva Vision canopy is undergoing a $32 million renovation,
its second upgrade since the Fremont Street Experience opened in 1995.
This explains much of the heavy equipment and construction workers
who crowd portions of Fremont Street in the late night and early morning hours.

Note:
A word to the wise:  Fremont Street is fun and entertaining,
but it also has an ugly and unsettling side.
I've chosen to share photos of the gentler side of Fremont Street.

  1. Wow, those ladies were a tad exposed!
Last time I was in Vegas, there was no canopy, so we really need to make a visit.

    1. Happy Friday, Alex! I've been going to Vegas since August 1973 ~ countless times. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised at likely ending up living in the area. Talk about change over 46 years! Yes, those ladies were exposed; that's why I took them from the back! That's tame! There are more salacious sights, but I made a deliberate choice not to photograph and publish those. Have a good one!

    1. Thanks, Debra! I've always had fun in Vegas. It's such a demanding and sensory-overloading environment that it cleared my head time after time, and I could get a real break from my teaching and union work. I sleep like a baby there for eight to ten hours a day. Have a great weekend!

  3. It’s been years since I was on Fremont Street, but did stay there a number of time when I lived in Utah (winter getaway). I also remember getting off Amtak (when it ran from LA to Salt Lake and connected to the Zephyr to go to Chicago) and staying in the Union Plaza.

    1. Hi, Sage! I'm sad about all the passenger trains that have disappeared. I always enjoyed riding on them. I've stayed at the Union Plaza a number of times. Once we had a room that looked straight down the canopy on Fremont Street. A light show featuring fighter jets had a stream of thundering jets flying straight at us, jet after jet, after jet. I'll never forget the roar of the engines and the sight of the jets which was technologically advanced for the time. Wishing you a great weekend!

  4. Hi Louise :) Thanks for sharing, such great photos! I will never get to Vegas...part of me would love to see all the sights, but part of me thinks there are way too many people there, though I liked seeing the Chippendales lol! ;) I would NEVER do that zip line, my gosh that's TOO HIGH!!! I liked reading about the old Nevada hotel too. Actually that photo of Rosa...I could turn that into one of my creepy paintings lol!

    1. Thanks, Rain! I'm so glad that you enjoyed the photos! It was well after 3:00 am before I finished my post last night, but knowing that even one person enjoyed my photos makes the late hours of work worth it. Over 500 posts in, and I still wildly underestimate how long it takes me to do a post. Life would be so much easier if I wasn't a perfectionist! LOL I've actually done the lower zip line, but not the high one. I really want to. I've been working up my courage. I'd love to see you turn Rosa into a creepy painting, and I'd love to see the finished painting! LOL I hope you and Alex have a great weekend!

    2. I commend you on the zip line! And yes, I will turn Rosa into a painting, I'll let you know when I have it done! I may have to wait for October to get my spook-juices flowing lol! ;)

  5. I loved all the photos. It's changed so much. We're going back to Vegas for our 30 year anniversary in a couple years (we honeymooned there) and I can't wait to see it.

    1. Thanks, Diane! I can't believe how much the city has changed, even though I've watched those changes develop over decades. I'm sure that you and your husband will have fun. If you're going in one of the cooler months, I highly recommend visiting Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area just west of Las Vegas. Even on hot days, the scenic drive is beautiful. There's lots of hiking and awesome geology to see. Enjoy your weekend!

  6. A dollar a day for accommodations even a poor starving author could afford lol need to invent time travel.

Great shots indeed. The ziplining would be fun. Would be interesting to people watch for a while indeed. The earplugs must be a necessity if you want any sleep in a hotel near there though.

    1. Hey, Pat! I'm trying to work up the courage to do the Slotzilla zipline. Maybe this next few days on Fremont Street. I've got to quit threatening and actually do it! LOL "A Not So New World" arrived in yesterday's mail. Fortunately, I picked up the mail and was able to sneak the package into the house. This, as I'm trying to streamline my library in case we move. LOL Have a great weekend!

  9. Dear Beautiful Louise, thanks for the superb photo-update on Fremont Street. It's so full of life and fun --but I shall wait until my deafness worsens before visiting. However, the energy and vitality you have captured makes me consider earplugs and an accelerated trip there. My sister, Minnie --a Southern Californian-- drives to Vegas regularly to meet up with her friends but she never takes photos. Thanks for filling that gap!

  10. Great photos of the Vegas Strip etc etc. They are excellent.
It is a favourite visiting place for Aussies - the LOUD variety, ha ha.
I must preferred Reno and Lake Tahoe when I visited that area.

  13. I really enjoyed our trek down Fremont Street. We went at night when there were a few more unsavory characters, but we never felt unsafe. My girls were highly amused by some of the more adult costumes, but we all enjoyed the lights and such. Unfortunately, the zip line was already full for the night so we couldn't ride, but we were able to to the Stratosphere rides before leaving Vegas, so it wasn't a complete loss.

Congrats to Terry on his winning!
