Friday Face Off Portrait Challenge

Today artists are sharing their portraits in Nicole's Friday Face Off Portrait Challenge.

The face or faces people share must have one of these expressions:

Happy, Sad, Tired, Surprised and or Anger.

I'm guessing that most people drew a human face or faces, but I really wanted to draw

Hula Dog, a favorite face of mine, who visits about with his Hula Auntie

when she decorates local statutes of Hawaiian icons with strands of leis.

I love Hula Dog, and I've been delighted to see him over the past several years.

When I first saw him, he was already grizzled.

Now he is definitely an old dog and he rests whenever he can,

ignoring his newest companion Hula Buddy.

I felt this day that Hula Dog was especially tired, so I drew his tired face.

Tired, but definitely adorable and much loved by me.

I had to play around with the image and park it in a holding area

where I store random things,

so I could outfox my printer which was giving me grief.

So a shout out to Debra at She Who Seeks for her Oilers Prayer that I snagged.

He was just too complicated for very amateur artist me that

I decided to map him like a geological formation and draft him on a larger grid.

I had to pull Hula Dog up on my computer too, because I realized after I was into it,

that there was a whole lot of black in this photo.

It took me about two hours to draw the grids and Hula Dog.

Then the fun began: trying to bring Hula Dog alive by coloring him with colored pencils.

I forgot the black thing behind Hula Dog's head was Prince Kuhio's shoe,

but going back to the original photo and checking would be too not ADHD. 😂

It took me two hours of coloring and experimenting, but I finally finished it,

after doing some outlining with a very fine black sharpie.

Then I showed it to Terry, who smiled quirkily and said,

"I could never doing anything like that!"

All and all, I'm quite pleased with Hula Dog.

If I weren't doing a Dry January (a little late), I'd have a margarita to celebrate.

(I don't have any mai tais. 😵‍💫)

I'm only on Day 29. So Sunday I'll celebrate Hula Dog!

Making the Best of It!

Aloha from rainy Honolulu!

It's been raining frequently since Tuesday evening,

and we are under a flash flood warning.

Periodically we get a glimpse of sunshine, but that's a tease.

The governor of Hawaii, Josh Green, ordered all state offices,

University of Hawaii campuses, public and charter schools on Oahu, Kauai, and Maui

closed on Friday, because an incredible amount of rain and high winds are expected.

We shall see. I'm looking at patches of blue sky as I write.

Meanwhile we're making the best of it.

I've been working with my friend Carolyn on hula chants and dancing,

and we continue to enjoy kanikapila at the Royal Grove

(although Wednesday's was cancelled because of rain).

And yes, DRUM ROLL, I earned my pā'u hula, my dance skirt!

Besides showing commitment and learning hula steps and dances,

I had to memorize a traditional Hawaiian oli and perform it in front of the class.

This oli requests permission to enter the dancing space.

You have no idea how much practice I put into this oli.

I thought I would be performing it at the end of the class,

but I had to hop up unexpectedly and do it earlier.

That meant the only video I have was taken

by my iPhone standing on the floor from across the room.

To post it here I had to film a video of my video.

Whatever works! 😂

For Nicole ~ Little Laki, a favorite kitty at Cat Café MOFF. He's a pistol, which is why I love him. 😂 The Japanese really enjoy relaxing with cats, so there are several of these cafés in Honolulu.

For Tom ~ The Aloha Spirit ~ Terry's pickleball buds had a happy hour get-together on March 10th at the Secret Spot for Terry's 75th birthday. Terry's birthday was actually the 11th, but that's when we could all meet. The guys are the pickleball players. I knew Val and Edna through hula. Many people like to meet during happy hour because the food and drink specials are so much cheaper. At the Secret Spot you can get a personal pizza and a mai tai for $12 or a beer and personal pizza for $10. We are experts at Happy Hour! 😂

For Debra ~ I spotted Hula Dog! He's an old guy now, but he accompanies his Hula Auntie as she drapes Hawaiian icons located in Waikiki with leis. Hula Dog has a younger Hula Buddy now who has joined them on their walks. Hula Dog enjoys sneaking naps whenever he can. He's one of my favorite locals.

It's lovely to see Hula Auntie honoring people like Prince Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole. His birthday on March 26th is a state holiday. Prince Kūhiō was a champion for native Hawaiian rights. He served as the Territorial Delegate from Hawaii in the U.S. House of Representatives for 10 consecutive terms from 1903 until he died in office in 1922. He is the only one born into royalty who has served in the U.S. Congress.

I hate to think our time here is winding down.

And more rain is coming next week, our last week.

Out and About in Waikiki

Two weeks in, and we are so grateful to be enjoying a tropical environment.

I dreamed of coming to Hawaii until I was 35,

and then Terry made my dream come true far beyond anything I ever hoped for.

He's the best!

We continue to be busy, but with time for relaxing too.

I've been out and about with my camera on my walks.

Among the things I'm watching is the restoration

of the Queen's Surf Seawall near the Barefoot Beach Cafe

which heavy southern swells undercut and partially collapsed in May 2024. source

Repair work began on January 21, 2025 and will take about six months. In the past week a large crane has constructed a sandbag barrier to protect the collapsed seawall area.

It's an environmentally sensitive operation because the collapse occurred

at the shoreline of the Waikiki Marine Life Conservation District (MLCD).

Established in 1988, the Waikiki MLCD protects 76 acres

from the Waikiki Beach Wall (Kapahulu Groin) to the historic War Memorial Natatorium

and from the high-water mark to 500 yards offshore.

To my delight I spotted a little dog from last year whom I had nicknamed Hula Dog.

I had first seen him near the entrance to the Kilohana Hula Show last February.

He develops a friendship with a Hawaiian monk seal, which his friends and family have a difficult time believing. Trouble follows and life lessons are learned.
