Every so often Terry shocks me with something so unexpected!
It happened most recently on Tuesday.
It was a small thing, but a big thing to me.
I was downstairs unpacking, sorting through a box
of what-the-hell-should-I-do-with-these things?,
when Terry turns up and interrupts me saying,
"Would you like to go see Downton Abby at the movie theatre?"
I did say it was a small thing. 😂
Terry hasn't taken me to a movie since before the pandemic.
I can't remember the last movie I dragged him to. Cloud Atlas???
As for him inviting me to go to a movie, it might be 15 or more years ago.
That's why it was a big deal for me.
I hesitated for a moment, mentally rearranging my To Do List,
and Terry said, "You said you didn't have anything to do this week."
"Outside appointments," I answered. "I have plenty to do at home!"
"Nothing that can't wait for a few hours. It's cold and rainy out.
This is a perfect day to go to the movies."
"You're right! I'd love to go see Downton Abbey. Let's go!"
On the way upstairs Terry said, "This was my own idea. Jon didn't suggest it."
Our friend Jon, a movie buff, frequently suggests movies I might like to see.
But Terry is a reluctant movie goer (I'm not sure why).
Perhaps Jon has given up on suggesting in-theatre movies.
Lately he's been suggesting movies and programs on tv ~ like The Accountant,
which is one of the best movies I've seen in a very long time.

"I bet you're shocked," Terry added as we reached for our jackets.
"Shocked and delighted!" I said.
Well, it has been a looong time since we were at the movies.
We went inside and discovered there was no one selling tickets.
We had to use a computer to buy our tickets and preorder our snacks.
Preorder our snacks?
Could we get everything to work right on the third or fourth try?
No.
It was humiliating when a young guy came up to the adjacent computer
and had his movie and snack tickets spitting out in 15-20 seconds.
I was thinking, I really am an old fossil!
Eventually the tickets emerged, we collected our hotdogs and a giant soda,
and headed for Theatre # 10.
Terry was shocked!
We went to the cheapest matinee with senior prices,
split a drink-and-2-hotdogs special, and the cost was $47.63!
I was a little surprised myself.
When I went to the movies as a preteen in Sioux Lookout,
I could buy a ticket, pop, and popcorn for 25¢.
(soda ~ American, pop ~ Canadian).
It took us a while, but eventually we found our assigned seats, and settled in.
Well, Terry settled in.
I got excited and frustrated trying to recline in my comfy chair,
and it was bucking up and down like a bronco.
It's times like that Terry pretends he doesn't know me. 😂
My chair quieted, the feature rolled, and we happily ate our hotdogs and shared our soda.
The clarity of the images, the vividness of the colors, and the stereo sound were amazing!
Obviously screen technology has improved too.
AMC Theatres "We Make Movies Better" ~ Yes, they do!
Of course, we both enjoyed Downton Abbey.
It was wonderful to see all our favorite characters and to have a satisfying end to the story.
The only downside was that this movie was the end to the story.
We had a great time, and I predict we will return to the movie theatre soon.
And next time, I'll know exactly what to do! 😂
Happy weekend!
Wow, Louise. 48.00!!! I haven't been to a theater in decades. I can see why. I am glad you and Terry went, though, it's nice. Yes, these young people today with their knowledge in technology gets me as well.
ReplyDeleteI went to McDonald's for a coffee a few months ago and still have never used their machine to order. A young guy offered to do my order on the machine and I politely declined, opting to order from a human cashier. 😆
Hi, Linda! I hope that you are doing well. I nearly always choose a human to interact with. Machines are replacing people everywhere for one reason, and I enjoy talking with people for another. I wish I was as comfortable with technology as my nieces and nephews! Have a great Friday!
DeleteSo far we can still buy everything at the box office or concession stand, but we can order in advance. Hate assigned seating though! And all the damn commercials. Add to it the outrageous prices and no wonder theaters are dying.
ReplyDeleteNice surprise. Although I can't wrap my brain around not being a movie-goer.
Happy Friday, Alex! I love movies, so I'm going to go to more with or without Terry. But the commercials drive me nuts. We timed our arrival at our seats for about 10 minutes before we figured the actual movie would start and found our seats about 5 minutes before (after our little-old-couple debacle at the computer). Not that I think of myself as old, but I know was much younger people are thinking. 😂 Enjoy your weekend!
Delete...and I didn't surprise my Sweetie!
ReplyDeleteEvery couple is unique! 😂 Have a great weekend, Tom!
Deleteoh my goodness love your post. So happy you had an adventure. It's been so long since I've been at the movies too. Last time it was before covid with my family and saw a children's christmas cartoon. I watched the series and would love to see the film. It's so expensive at the movie theatre. I am so happy you had a lovely time. Have a wonderful Friday and a happy weekend! Much positivity and hugs.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind comment, Maria! I loved Downton Abby. If I can find it on my tv, I just might watch the whole series again. I always love positivity and hugs! Sending both to you! ❤️
DeleteOh boy, thank you for the warnings! Last time I was iat the movies was 2010 - reckon I´d be like... What the heck?! Pre-order? And the price! At least you had fun after all.
ReplyDeleteHi, Iris! Yes, we did have fun. I'll definitely go back, but not frequently! 😂 Enjoy your weekend with Ingo!
DeleteI'm definitely a Downton Abbey fan. However, $47.63 to see a movie? That is a crime. I'm glad you had a good time though. I would be right there with you on the buying tickets. I can not do a kiosk or those check in computers. It was so nice of Terry to take you to the movies though. Thank you for sharing with FFO and a have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteI'm sad that Downton Abbey is finished, Nicole. 😠Maybe it will come back anyway. So many people have returned from the dead or from vanishing on my soap. 😂. Yes, it was really nice of Terry to take me to the movies. I gave him a big dose of appreciation. All the best to you!
DeleteThat was nice of Terry. Almost $50? Part of that is to pay for those reclining seats. Still, should've been a fantastic hot dog.
ReplyDeleteHi, Diane! It was a very basic hotdog. At least it wasn't boiled like the last hotdog I had at a casino snack bar. I do like the reclining seats. I could take them home. I hope that you are enjoying one of your gorgeous, scrumptious charcuterie boards this weekend. Take care!
DeleteOh Louise, you are so funny! When I first started reading this, I thought, "Wow, they must be very rich if they buy food at the movies!". LOL! We don't even buy drinks, the prices are crazy high! So glad you liked Downton Abbey, the views of England alone would make me enjoy it. xx
ReplyDeleteEngland is so beautiful, Kay! I long to return. I wish I were very rich. Then I could go to the movies two or three times a week. 😂. And have a chef to cook for me at home. Oh, and a masseuse! And a daily trainer! 😂 I bought a lotto ticket on the recent huge Powerball. I had lots of fun imagining what I would do with the money ~ definitely got my money's worth out of that $3. I hope you and Richard have a lovely weekend! ❤️
DeleteWhen you win big on the lottery, stop by Georgia and take us to England with you! We would have a blast! You both have a great weekend too!! xx
DeleteYou bet, Kay!
DeleteA wonderful date night!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely, Christine! Enjoy your weekend!
DeleteMy hubby doesn't care for movies, so he says! The only movies I've seen in theaters are those I attend in groups of girl friends. Even then, I think the last I saw was when I went to the theater in CO! They did have those amazing seats and drink service, though! And yes, the prices were a shock!
ReplyDeleteIt's so nice to see you, Dreaming! I do love those seats ~ Once I figured out how to use it. 😂. I hope you are enjoying life!
DeleteI haven't been to a movie since before COVID. I am glad you had a pleasant surprise!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jeff! Based on the comments, you are not alone. I hope you don't get rained out this weekend! Take care!
DeleteI have never watched a single episode of Downton Abbey and I feel ashamed because it is a PBS staple. So glad you enjoyed the film, but I can eat for a month on what you spent on that outing. Happy FFO, Louise.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Elizabeth! I wish I could eat on a month for that amount! 😂 If you ever get a chance to watch Downton Abbey, I highly recommend it. Enjoy your Sunday and have a great week!
DeleteI saw Downton Abbey as a series on Netflix. I enjoyed it so much
ReplyDeleteHappy you linked to AFFF
much♡love
Thanks, Gillena! I haven't done too well with blogging this summer. We renovated our main living area in our duplex this summer and lived in the basement during the renovation. It was quite the experience. It was really great to visit your blog again. Have a happy week!
DeleteI want to see that movie. I have bought tickets online, but never snacks. That is different. And seeing a movie is so pricey, isn't it? Good story this week. And I loved reading your comment you left on my blog. Yes we went to Baddock. We stayed for a couple of nights at an Air B&B in St. Ann's. Among other places because we pretty much circled the whole province. Wow,what a gorgeous place you come from. And I was so happy be among people who are polite overall. Here in the US that is going away, sadly. We had a really lovely trip, and I would definitely go back and do some of the things we didn't get to. Have a super weekend. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that you had a great time in Nova Scotia, Erika! I really love my native province, and I was sad that I couldn't get "home" this summer. One summer during university, I worked on a geological project with a company out of Toronto. My teammates and I hiked up every stream from Mabou to Cape North in Cape Breton looking for fluorite. It was one of the best summers of my life. I love Cape Breton with all my heart, and every other inch of my province. I'm really sad about how things are going in the US. I love my adopted country too. All the best to you! ❤️
DeleteI know what you mean about prices. I try to go to senior day or matinees, eat (or smuggle food) and not buy anything. It's outrageous. And I confess, I don't like the reclining seats as well as the old ones! (I think I am in the minority here.) Not a fan of assigned seats, either! Even a small popcorn is pricey! It's a totally different experience.
ReplyDeleteBut then again, nothing like seeing a movie in a theatre.I saw it during my time alone at the lake and I loved seeing my "Downton" pals again. (Also, the "London" house was actually two rooms from Basildon Park, which we visited when we were in England last year, so that was extra fun.) I just wish they had closed captions!
I say kudos to Terry! That's really cool!
Hi, Jeanie! I love closed captions! Next on my To Fix List is my hearing. 😂. I did smuggle in a bottle of water in my purse. I was not going to pay an outrageous price for water! That's really cool that you visited two of the rooms featured in the movie. What fun! I hope you have a great week! ❤️
