July 2013 Scavenger Hunt: Colorado

Hey!  I hope you have all had an excellent July!
The summer is flying by!

Thanks to everyone who wrote kind comments

on my posts that I couldn't respond to
and for all the well wishes when and after
I was in the hospital.

Soon I'll be back

to my regular enjoying of your blogs
and to writing more frequent posts
on my own blog.

Thanks also to Jill

and her Made with Love blog
for setting up the hunt.

Scavenger Hunt July 2013:  Colorado

1.  Black
Black Engine 71 ~ Colorado & Southern Railway
Blackhawk Branch

C&S Engine 71 ran on the Blackhawk Branch narrow gauge line from Denver to Central City,"The Richest Square Mile on Earth."
The engine pulled ore and passengers.
The Blackhawk Branch was torn up in 1941,
and the last C&S narrow gauge run in Colorado
occurred on August 25, 1943.

Grays Peak, 14,278 feet/4,352 meters (right)
Seen from Peak 8 in Breckenridge
These mountains are part of the Front Range in Colorado,
and they are formed of metamorphic gneiss 1.7 billion years old.
I have climbed both peaks.

To get the picture of Grays and Torreys from Breckenridge,
I had to get high enough to see over
the 12,000 foot+ Mt. Bald ridgeline and other high areas.
We four took the BreckConnect Gondola
from the town of Breckenridge to the Base of Peak 8.
Then we caught the Colorado SuperChair
to the top of Peak 8 just above 11,000 feet/3353 meters.
From there we hiked to an overlook.

  3. Breath-taking views Louise! Was it difficult to breathe at the top? I remember at Banff I had difficulty breathing for a while...until I adjusted.
That smile is THE BEST!! Just wonderful!
The Fireweed must be breath-taking as well. Great shot!

    1. Hi Jim! Thank you for the kind comment. I live at 6,000 feet/1,829 meters; Black Hawk is 8,000 feet/2,438 meters; Noreen is at 10,000 feet/3,048 meters ~ so I'm used to higher elevations ~ no problem at 11,000/3,353. Once I hit 13,000 - 14,000 feet/3,946 - 4,267 meters I have to slow down because my heart pounds. I take slow deep breaths and stop frequently as I head for a summit. It is an incredible feeling to summit!!!!! I've loved fireweed since I first saw it up north. Take care!

  5. It was so great to see you and your bro hugging with the smiles. I can't believe how much time has gone by since 1964(YAY Beatles)had to through that in. Heads up, David Sheppard put a photo of the Athenaeum staff on his FB and I saw you and sent you the pic on your FB page. He has the original. He also put a swimming photo of me and the Acadia team up to. People say I must have been only 8 years old when I was in University. I just smile.
Your pictures are great of the gondolas and peaks, so many of them. I live, as you know in a very flat place so gondolas are non-existent. I need to take one of those. I need some altitude. I loved hiking the Canadian Rockies years ago.
Hope your health is improving and Terry is bending over backwards to rub your back and feet whenever you put your hand up.

    1. Hey Ron! Thanks for the Athenaeum photo! Working on Acadia's newspaper was awesome ~ many of my favorite university memories! Spotted you right away on the swim team. People were always thinking I looked younger too. My Mom always said that I'd be happy I was older and still looking younger!!!! You still don't look anywhere near your age. I love altitude! The higher I can get, the better. I am almost back to 100%! Just need a little more endurance. Terry takes very good care of me!

  11. Glad to hear that you're home from the hospital and on the mend! I didn't know that columbines could come in that gorgeous shade of violet!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Debra! Thanks for the kind words! The color of the columbines above is the specified color in Colorado's state columbine flower. They come in other shades, but this is my favorite one. It was first discovered on Pike's Peak in 1820 by Edwin James. Colorado's school children voted it the official state flower in 1899. The ones I photographed were growing along the River Walk by the Blue River in Breckenridge. Have an awesome day!

I caught several of Rebecca's blogs, including one with Jacob. What a sweet baby ~ and a boy. He'll be a fun change ~ and how lucky he is to have two older sisters to spoil him! Rebecca's a great little blogger. Thanks for the hugs and healing thoughts! Take care!

  15. How nice to see you back. What very stylish socks - I see they put the no-skid on both surfaces for foolproof application....

"Wheels" is of course a front-runner photo for me. But those smiles and skies are hard to beat. :)

P.S. Our columbine is wild and red, with yellow centers.

    1. Hi Sue! Thank you ~ It's good to be back. Yes, no-skid top and bottom on the socks ~ the regular gray have only one non-skid surface. Plus I had to wear a large yellow wristband with "Fall Risk" on it. But I'm 100% now. I've seen your columbine in gardens here ~ It is lovely too. Happy bike riding to you!

  16. I really, really, really enjoyed your post. Your photos are stunning and it was so much fun to see so much of Colorado through your lens. I will be heading up to Breck for lunch some day next week... maybe. I enjoy being there and love skiing there. Sadly, Mr. Dreamy doesn't ski - so I don't venture out on my own as often as I'd like to.
I never knew that the hospital socks were color-coded. How very interesting. Hmmmm.... I wonder what color my sister is wearing?! She is a huge fall risk right now!

    1. Hi Dreaming! It's always fun for me to see photos posted by other Coloradans too! How can one not enjoy Breck! We're planning to go there for Octoberfest. We're so fortunate in that Terry's sister has a home at the base of Peak 10. Yes, the socks are color-coded at the Medical Center of Aurora ~ so are the uniforms of the various types of staff. I hope that your sister is doing better!!!!! Take care, Dreaming!
