No Tropical Waters for My Tippy Toes

No tropical waters for my tippy toes,
no delicious mai tais to sip in the tropical breezes.

This past week has been chaotic in the Barbour household.
We went from preparing and packing for three weeks in Hawaii and one in Vegas,
to canceling our trip and trying to recoup some of our money,
to unpacking and restocking the supplies in our house.
And that was for starters!

Last Thursday I hit my all-time-since-retirement record
of 35,312 steps on my Fitbit, and I never left the house.

I'm the reason for all this chaos.
As a senior with asthma who is susceptible to bronchitis and pneumonia
and who is allergic to almost all antibiotics,
I reluctantly conceded that perhaps this wasn't the best time to be away from home.

Likely we would have been just fine on our trip,
but the downside medically and financially was definitely risky
if we ran afoul of the coronavirus.
My husband Terry was concerned about me, and my brother was FaceTiming me daily.
Better safe than sorry was their relentless message.

It was a huge letdown because we were looking forward
to seeing our friends and doing all the fun things we love.

We're not hunkered down and afraid.  We're not hoarding toilet paper and tuna.
We're just trying to be prudent until the coronavirus situation becomes clearer.

I'll be around to catch up with all my blogging buddies,
and I'll get back on track with posting next week.

The upside to all of this is that I might finally catch my tail!

Wishing you each peace and health during this crazy time.
This too will pass!
Meanwhile, my tippy toes remain ready to go.

Till next time ~

  1. Well the cat could send you 50lbs of litter. You spread that out on the floor and you could pretend it is the beach lol might work. Just don't have wet feet or it may not be fun.

Better safe than sorry especially with added issues. As financially it sure wouldn't be cheap. If you catch that tail, don't bite it, fyi.

    1. You always make me smile and laugh, Pat! I'm very tactile, so the idea of walking of cat litter with wet feet is as cringeworthy as rolling in icky mudflats in Smith's Cove. Thank the cat for his generous offer, but I'll pass!

As for catching my tail, I've been the picture of indolence this morning. I've been sitting here for almost two hours drinking my coffee and watching the news. I have done nada ~ so totally not me. When I woke up, Terry was gone. He returned from Target a little while later, after scoring the last few cans of tuna, the last flat of small water bottles, and four frozen pizzas. He was thrilled from the hunt in a store mobbed in the early morning. On one level all of this is quite funny, on another, sobering.
Have a good one, my rhyming friend!

  2. You should be able to get most of your money back from the airlines. Be persistent. Sorry you're not going, but sounds like it's a good idea.

    1. Thanks, Alex! Terry is most determined, and we're ahead of a lot of other people now canceling. We're glad the decision is behind us, and we are convinced that we made the right choice for us. I hope that your book edits are going well ~ I can't wait to read it when it comes out.

  3. Oh, that's disappointing! But better safe than sorry, it's true. And Honolulu will still be there next year. A lot of people in our age group are realizing that we fall into the "vulnerable" category -- WTF!!!

    1. WTF, for sure. I turn 70 in five days! How did that happen? LOL We're in the house through the weekend. I think Terry would sit on me if I tried to exit the house right now. He is invigorated with protecting me. I think he's overreacting a little, but I love him even more for it. Have a lovely weekend with your Rare One!

  4. That's too bad! It probably is the right call, though. Keep yourself as healthy as possible!

Some people we know were going to NY - next week! - for the purpose of going to Broadway shows. They were so disappointed when they heard Broadway was shuttered. We were disappointed for them!

    1. Hi, Madeline! I think a lot of people are being disappointed right now. It's hard to believe how much has changed in a week. This time last week we were well into to packing and just beginning to think about canceling our trip. Now I'm content to be home. The good thing is that we'll have other opportunities to do what we're missing right now. All the best to you.

  6. Home is the safest, shop online where you can, do not fly, even with your own wings and a clean sky!!! Down here, events are cancelled, friends who have booked to fly from Oz to here have cancelled or postponed, a friend in Auckland has cancelled her 80th birthday do, and for mine in July, it will probably not be a party either. Huge ramifications world wide, and we need to be as vigilant as we can. In almost every shop there is hand sanitiser at the door, one cafe had an automatic one, lots safer, place your palm under and a blob falls out. No hand sanitiser available in any shop near us, and no isopropyl alcohol so I could make our own. Lots of soap and hot water all the time. Stay safe, and let Terry fuss and pamper all he wants, the internet and clear skies will keep you smiling.

    1. Who thought everything could change so quickly, Jean? We're fortunate in that I generally keep the house well-stocked ~ Old Canadian habit that I can't break. We haven't seen hand sanitizer in a while, but we have lots of soap and hot water. We're laying low and making the most of being home. Please take care! I'm sending you and Hugh lots of love!

  8. Boo! Hiss! on that stupid virus ruining your trip. Of course, it's wise to be cautious.

    2. We are indeed cautious. We spend most of our time at home.

  9. It's very wise to be cautious, Louise, especially if you're at a higher risk. Vacation spots will still be there after this passes! Be well xo

  11. Stay safe and well.
Like you, I'm not in panic mode either.
But given things, I am cautious.
We are set for food, I think for about 4 weeks.
    We'll see how that goes.
As for crapper paper, no stores had any in my village.
But ... Plenty of tissues, paper towels and napkins.
So I got napkins. We already had 2 boxes of tissues.
Napkins were less money so I went that route, last night.
And, I'm happy to sew little bits of fabric to make homemade reusable butt wipes.
That said, stay safe and be well.

    1. Thanks, Ivy! You and yours be safe too. I really don't get the toilet paper panic. Like you, I have a plan B for that ~ quite similar. We're well stocked up, but we're replacing perishables as we can. Take care!

    2. I can understand the toilet paper to an extent.
To an extent, I get it.
But what I see lacking is that problem solve think.
Okay, no crapper paper. What are my other options?
Well, right in the same isle were lots and lots of boxes of tissues.
Though when Tim went to DG he said the tissues were hit hard too.
But when I went to four stores yesterday, picking up bits and bobs,
tissues were everywhere. Same with paper towels.
But getting back to the bath rolls, I can understand it to a point.
Not to the point of panic and greed. That's just uncool.
What I'm working on is Autumn and what can I grow in my garden now,
so that I need the store less.
Though to be honest, that was my plan back in December.
Because we're working on getting out of debt.
The less I need to buy, the better.
      Long comment, eh? Stay safe.

  14. You did the right thing by cancelling your trip, Louise. They're finding out every day that this virus is much stronger than they realized. It lived for 17 days after passengers were off the cruise ship. 17 days! You will get to Hawaii one day. Alive is preferable, eh! LOL. Take care, dear Louise. Looking forward to more pictures.

  15. I'm sorry you missed your vacation, but yes, better safe than sorry. We won't be doing any traveling this summer. We thought about Scotland, but leaving the house this year, even staying in the US, just feels too risky. I am high risk due to my biologic infusions, so I'll be sheltering in place probably long after we're given the okay to return to normal.
