Oops!

Oops!  Yesterday, Thursday, I forgot that today would be Friday.
I totally spaced writing a blog post.
We arrived in Las Vegas about 4:30 pm on Wednesday
after a cancelled flight, flight delays, and finally a ground stop
just as we were about to pull away from our gate in Denver.
We made it to Las Vegas finally, but our bags ended up in Phoenix.

Not to worry!
Our friend Jon picked us up at the airport, we checked into El Cortez,
had dinner, and met friends at the Vue Bar at the D.
We had lots of fun catching up with our friends from the East and West coasts.

I faded pretty quickly, went back to our room, and crashed.
Terry gained a second wind and went on for the evening with more of our friends.
Southwest flew our bags to Vegas and delivered them to our hotel at 2:30 am.
I was really happy to be reunited with my suitcase in the morning, let me tell you!

I had planned to share some more photos of our Yellowstone trip,
but I also want to visit your blogs.
So I'll save Yellowstone for another time, and post some photos
for Rain's Thursday Art Date and Nicole's Friday Face Off.

The theme for my friend Rain's Thursday Art Date is Hair.
Here are several hair photos:

While in Nova Scotia this summer, my cousin David brought over a box of photos
to donate to the Smith's Cove Historical Society,
which my sisters Donnie and Barb are co-presidents of.
The box contained a lot of family photos which I took the opportunity to photograph.

This photo is of my Great Great Aunt Arietta Cossaboom MacFarland,
sister to my Great Grandfather Kelsey Cossaboom.
She was beautiful and had the most glorious hair.

I find volcanoes endlessly fascinating,
and Pele's hair is a fragile and beautiful phenomenon
of Kīlauea Volcano and the Kaʻū Desert on the island of Hawaii.
Pele's hair is formed by gas during a volcanic eruption.
When a gas bubble bursts near the surface of a lava flow,
it can stretch the skin of the molten lava into long, thin threads.
The treads of volcanic glass can be two feet long and only one micron thick (0.001mm).
The wind can carry Pele's hair and deposit it in thick mats in low-lying areas.

The strands are fragile, brittle, and sharp.
They are also hazardous, because the tiny slivers of glass can lodge
in your skin or eyes.  National Park Service

My last hair photo is a beautiful sculpture
by globally known, Cape Town, South African artist Daniel Popper.
This lovely piece graces the Beach Club at Resorts World in Las Vegas.

My photos for Nicole's Friday Face Off this week:

While flying to Vegas I had a window seat,
but the plane's engine blocked much of the view.
I did catch a bit of my favorite Waterpocket Fold
in Capitol Reef National Park in Southern Utah.
This amazing monoclinal fold extends for nearly 100 miles (160 km).

But, for the most part, I had to entertain myself rather than shoot photos out the window.
I learned how to edit photos on my iPhone and found some cool faces
among the old family photos that my cousin David donated to the museum in Smith's Cove:

The first is a photograph of my mother's father John MacDonald (front, right).
When his father died, his parish priest told his mother to send him to Boston
to live with relatives because she had too many children to look after.
While the Boston couple in the photo treated him well,
he never got over being separated from his mother.

When I was little, a bottle of pop was a rare treat.
My parents didn't have money to spare for treats like this very often.
Obviously, my brother Roy relished this bottle of Coca Cola!

I had amazing, loving great aunts and uncles when I
was growing up.
Of course, they were older by the time I arrived on the scene,
so I was delighted to find this old photo of my Great Aunt Nan
when she was a high school student dressed up as a fairy godmother.

These final faces really captured my interest when Terry and I
were having dinner at the Old Faithful Inn Dining Room.
This glass etching is one of several etchings that separate
the Old Faithful Dining Room and the Bear Pit Lounge.

I did some research trying to discover who created this image,
and I hope I have the correct information.
This was one of several carved wood panels with animals
in a number of nightclub scenes in the original 1936 Bear Pit Lounge (source).

Robert Reamer, the architect for Old Faithful Inn,
requested Yellowstone Park Hotel Company cartoonists to come up with the images
which were sandblasted into large fir-veneer panels.
In 1988 the faded wooden panels were etched onto glass by Jack Herndon in Denver (source).
Regardless of how this etching came about, I find it enigmatic and oddly beautiful.

I'm sure all our hearts go out to the people of Florida
who have suffered devastating loses.

I'm looking forward to visiting around!
Have a great weekend!

  1. My heart does indeed go out to the people of Florida, and Cuba and Pakistan as they clean up after Nature's fury.
Love, love, love your photos today - and am glad that you were reunited with your luggage.

    1. Thanks, Sue! I'm glad you enjoyed my photos. So many people are suffering from Nature's fury indeed. It's beyond tragic. Pakistan has been hit very, very hard. Have a great weekend!

  5. There is something about old photos I adore. They don't have to be people I know. They just tell stories. Arietta Cossenbloom was gorgeous and what a fabulous photo. And the photo of Annie made me smile. That's a beautiful etching from Yellowstone. I'll be eager to see more. Glad you made it to Vegas -- and that your luggage finally did too!

    1. Thanks, Jeanie! I feel the same way about old photos. Terry and I do enjoy visiting Vegas. We're downtown which is more like Vegas used to be. We've switched hotel rooms today. I had trouble getting connected to the internet, so the D sent an IT tech to my room and got everything working just now. I am relieved! Thanks for commenting. May you have a lovely Sunday and a great week ahead!

Pete's hair looks amazing. I had no idea.
Also, love the old black and white photographs; they grab the attention. Your great Aunt Arietta was a real beauty!

    1. Thanks, Dixie! I love photography, and I am so grateful for point and shoot cameras. I took a few photography classes at university, but my eyes had trouble focusing in low light, especially in studio shots. So I am an amateur. I joke that I'll take a photo of anything that's alive or isn't. You have an enjoyable week too. Every day is a gift!

  11. The enormity of your Cumulonimbus Cloud is illustrated by the tiny plane flying into it ... an amazing shot (I love cloud and weather pictures ).I love the picture of your Great Aunt Arietta Cossaboom McFarland ( and love the name too ) ... so Victorian and yet she looks modern.
Pele's Hair is like spun glass ... I wonder what it is made up of. A very unusual and interesting picture. First time I have heard of it.
Daniel Popper has a series of sculptures currently in our Arboretum. They are awesome and I will publish pictures of them at some point in time. His work is amazing ...
Your old family photo's are wonderful and a sad story about your Mother's Grandfather ... I can't imagine separating a son from his mother.
I love the glass etching and the characters seem familiar to me ... I seem to remember the cartoonist from my younger years (not by name sadly). But, I am guessing you could find out who it is if you go back far enough.
What a lovely time I have had here today ... Thank you for another delightful visit, Fundy Blue ...

    1. I enjoyed your comment so much, Andrea. I'm glad that you enjoyed my post. I had fun putting it together. You were spot on when you said Pele's hair is like spun glass. It is volcanic glass formed from basalt containing calcium plagioclases, pyroxenes, and some olivines. The basalt forms where islands straddle a hot spot or rift in the ocean, like Hawaii or Iceland. I look forward to seeing your Daniel Popper photos. His work is wonderful. Have a great week! Take care!

    1. I'm glad to see you here, Adam! I was thinking about you, your wife, and your kids a lot and hoping you were okay as Hurricane Ian moved up the eastern seaboard. I was reasonably sure you were, but after seeing what it did to Florida I was worried about you and everyone in its path. The loss of life is distressing. I hope you get to fly a lot more, my friend. Have a great week and take care!

I hope I have no problems linking up with the internet at the Cal. I'm looking forward to visiting the Friday Face Off posts. Have a great day, everyone!

  14. wow, you have a lot of memories. I kept a few photoalbums but I don´t know much of the family in it. Your Aunt Arietta is a very beautiful woman :) And her hair is gorgeous.
The sky over Las Vegas was stunning. Love it. I have been to Las Vegas or really, we were just passing through. We only made some jokes about getting married :) :)

    1. A lot of people joke about getting married in Vegas, and I know people who have gotten married here. The little wedding chapels are fun to see. It's a rare day that I don't run into a bride or two. I do have a lot of family photos and memories, Monica, thanks to the fact that I have relatives on both sides of my family who took photos and others who worked on our genealogy. I'm really grateful for them. Next year I will have been coming to Vegas for fifty years ~ not every year, but many of them. It's always been a place where I can relax, sleep, and not worry about anything. Thanks for visiting! Take care!

  20. Your posts are always interesting and fun and filled with wonderful photos both past and present. Learning about your family and seeing old photos is captivating, Louise. And I'm always eager to see the adventures you're on. I LOVE to travel and when I can't, I enjoy what others can can share. I worked on removing images from albums to store them in containers and it was a lot of fun. And bittersweet, too. Looking at photos of people I loved who are no longer with us, photos of them young and full of life, was heartwarming and heartbreaking. What a walk down memory lane! Your trip to Las Vegas sounds like quite the ordeal but the amount of fun to be had outweighs it! Have a lovely week ahead. George and I keep talking about visiting Las Vegas at some point. Perhaps we will get to it in the future. xo
