Aloha

Aloha from Honolulu!
Terry and I made it to Hawaii, after a long trip that gifted us with
an atmospheric riverPacific Ocean expanses, and beautiful clouds.

I was curious to see what an atmospheric river would look like in Cloud Land
I caught my first glimpse as our plane left Las Vegas and headed for Honolulu.

As we flew closer, the broad band of cloud looked more ominous.

The pilot announced that it would be bumpy
and instructed the flight crew to strap in as we flew into the wall of gray.
The cloud enveloped our plane, and we bumped and jittered up through a thick gray fog,
until we broke through the roof of the atmospheric river.

After more than an hour flying over the North Pacific Ocean toward Hawaii
we finally cleared the atmospheric river and saw blue ocean below.

It's hard to grasp how vast the Pacific Ocean is,
water as far as you can see as you fly for hours and hours.
Cloud Land relieves the aching ocean blue with its endless patterns of evaporation.

And, then, like something out of a dream, Maui appears, followed by Molokai and Lanai.

Rain's Thursday Art Date theme for this week is Collage.
I don't have a collage piece, but I do have a grouping of sculptures
which includes what I thought was Donatello's famous sculpture
of David, the boy who defeated the giant Goliath.
But this statue is not the famous Donatello sculpture in the Bargello,
and I can't figure out where I took this photo (possibly an Eduardo Secco gallery).
Below this "collage" is the actual Bargello sculpture.

For Nicole's Friday Face Off, I chose two closeups of Donatello's sculpture:
the shepherd Davids' face and the head of the giant Goliath.

  1. I've been to Hawaii when I was young (coming back from Japan) but I don't remember it. It would be weird to see nothing but ocean for hours on end.
    Have a great time!

  3. haha can't remember? Maybe too busy staring at that backside? hahaha

Yeah. The oceans sure are vast. Taking ships across them must take forever. The amount of time people spend on those container ships and the like must be nuts. Can't say I've been in an atmospheric river before. Enjoy the sun and sand we are finally getting that white crap here today.

    1. That backside definitely dominates the photo ~ lol! I'd go bonkers on a container ship. That is definitely not the life for me. Aurora just had its worst snowstorm in thirty years. I'm sure glad I am here. and dodged that! I'm loving the sunshine, although I haven't hit the sand yet. I've been swimming in a pool almost every day, building up my confidence and strength for tackling the ocean. My vision is much better, and Terry will be with me when I venture into the ocean. I hope you don't get hit too hard with the white crap! Have a great weekend, Pat!

  4. How lovely to go to Hawaii. I've never been, and your photos make it quite enticing. I also like your "collage" of sculptures. I'm so happy for you, Louise! Not long ago I spoke to a client on a work-related matter. She has a summer house in Lansdowne. I thought, Well, I know about that place. I couldn't engage in any personal conversation with her, though.

    Love,

    1. Wow, Janie! Talk about a small world! A summer house in Lansdowne! It is lovely to be in Hawaii, especially since there has been a lot of snow since we left Aurora. I hope to share lots of photos. Last year, when I was here, I was so sick because of my thyroid, that I hardly took any photos. So not me. Have a great weekend!

    1. Maui is certainly a spectacular place, Debra. We flew there on a day trip on Wednesday. I've given up on winning the Big One, although I still sometimes buy tickets. I likely wouldn't buy a place there with lotto winnings now. I'd stay in a post hotel in Wailea and hire a driver to take me all over the island, and a nature guide to carry my backpack as I explored off-road. A good-looking one ~ lol. I can dream, can't I?

  7. I felt entranced by cloud land you flew over dear Louise. Bumpy part of the flight through atmospheric River must be thrilling yet bit scary?
Just like you if was there I have kept looking outside the window below and kept clicking :)

This is so exciting and amazing to witness all these breathtaking views through your eyes :)
Magical shots that will be treasured in my for long!
By the grace of God you guys landed safely and the photo of your balcony shows that you stay will be rewarding as well. Loved the sunlight bathing the sitting area.
Health peace and happiness to you two!

    1. Thanks, Baili, my uplifting friend! I used to be very frightened by turbulence in the air when I was flying. But a Navy structural engineer convinced me that planes could handle the bumpy air on commercial flights. Now I find it more thrilling than scary. The earth is so beautiful from the sky, and I'm glad that you enjoyed seeing it through my eyes. Terry is so sweet ~ He always insists that I take the window seat so I can see and take photos of the beauty. I love the view from our lanai. To the right we can see the Ali Way Canal and the mountains, to the right the beautiful Pacific Ocean, and in between the urban skyscrapers. It's so different from where we live in Aurora on the edge of the High Plains. Both places have big skies, and I love that more than anything else. I would feel trapped living in an area with tall trees hiding the sky. Blessings to you and your family, Baili!

  10. We just "enjoyed" back to back to back atmospheric rivers on the ground for a few weeks. We finally got a break. As much as we need the rain, this was a bit much in a very short time.
I love Hawai'i, especially the Big Island. I don't think I would enjoy the view of high rise buildings though.

    1. Hi Carole! I'm glad that you got some much-needed rain, but it would have been better if the volume had been spread out over more time. I love the high-rise buildings, especially at night because they are so beautiful and different from what I normally see. To their right from our lanai we have a gorgeous view of the ocean and to their left we have a view of the Ali Wai Canal and the gorgeous mountains. I win in every direction I look. Have a great weekend! Dry, I hope!

I was impressed by the size of the Pacific and was delighted you kept taking photos all the way there. I was surprised how close those three islands are to each other. Great perspective shot.

  20. As old as I am, I have never been to Hawaii ... my son and his wife went and my grandparents went, but I haven't. Rumor has it that it is very expensive, so I guess I have denied myself the opportunity. What I love most about your post is the clouds ... I love clouds. Once upon a time I used to know the names of them like you, but no more ... I just see them, love them and often take pictures of them. I am waiting for Rain to give a prompt of clouds :) Loved your Italian humor, especially the Ebola ... normally there is nothing funny about Ebola, but that is what made this so funny :) As always, though you don't always post, when you do, it's a slam dunk! Good to see you again, Louise :)

    1. Thanks for your lovely comment about my posts, Andrea! Yes, Hawaii is expensive, but traveling here has been my dream since I was a little girl. I have always been fascinated by volcanoes, and Hawaii is an amazing volcano destination. Terry made my Hawaiian dreams come true, and we escape the snow and cold for time here, especially in the last decade. Of course we do everything we can to save money, and we eat nearly all our breakfasts and lunches in our condo, a fair number of dinners too. We walk and ride the bus. I love being here. I hope sometime you get a chance to see it too. Take care and enjoy your weekend.

I'm "rehabbing" a bum hip caused by a broken foot and broken rib. I'm doing exercises in a pool every day. I haven't been able to swim since before the pandemic because I developed Graves Eye Disease and bad double vision. I have my last two drug infusions (out of eight) here in Hawaii, and my vision is much better. I look forward to tackling the ocean again.

  24. Lovely pics, and what an interesting time away you both have had. When you said about your journey being 'bumpy' it reminded me of a plane journey my husband, son and I were having to Canada. The weather was very bad and the plane dropped a long way down, everyone was a bit anxious. Then a choir who were traveling in the back of the plane started singing The Lord's prayer and everything calmed. All the passengers clapped. Our favourite journeys were always on ships - although we were once on a liner in forty foot waves. :-)
