Today artists are sharing their portraits in Nicole's Friday Face Off Portrait Challenge.
The face or faces people share must have one of these expressions:
Happy, Sad, Tired, Surprised and or Anger.
I'm guessing that most people drew a human face or faces, but I really wanted to draw
Hula Dog, a favorite face of mine, who visits about with his Hula Auntie
when she decorates local statutes of Hawaiian icons with strands of leis.
Hula Dog sleeps while Hula Auntie drapes a statue of Prince Kuhio
with leis and Hula Buddy stands by.

I love Hula Dog, and I've been delighted to see him over the past several years.
When I first saw him, he was already grizzled.
Now he is definitely an old dog and he rests whenever he can,
ignoring his newest companion Hula Buddy.
I felt this day that Hula Dog was especially tired, so I drew his tired face.
Tired, but definitely adorable and much loved by me.
I worked from this photo:

I had to play around with the image and park it in a holding area
where I store random things,
so I could outfox my printer which was giving me grief.
So a shout out to Debra at She Who Seeks for her Oilers Prayer that I snagged.

He was just too complicated for very amateur artist me that
I decided to map him like a geological formation and draft him on a larger grid.
It took me about two hours to draw the grids and Hula Dog.
Then the fun began: trying to bring Hula Dog alive by coloring him with colored pencils.
I forgot the black thing behind Hula Dog's head was Prince Kuhio's shoe,
but going back to the original photo and checking would be too not ADHD. 😂
It took me two hours of coloring and experimenting, but I finally finished it,
after doing some outlining with a very fine black sharpie.
Then I showed it to Terry, who smiled quirkily and said,
"I could never doing anything like that!"

All and all, I'm quite pleased with Hula Dog.
If I weren't doing a Dry January (a little late), I'd have a margarita to celebrate.
(I don't have any mai tais. 😵💫)
I'm only on Day 29. So Sunday I'll celebrate Hula Dog!
I'm linking to Gillena's Lunch Break, Nicole's Friday Face Off, Tom's Aloha Friday, and Debra's She Who Seeks.
I think Terry and I are finally on the upswing, not 100%, but maybe 60%!

I'm with Terry. No chance I could ever do anything like that. Nicely done indeed.
ReplyDeleteGood you are on the upswing too. Maybe by the time you read this it will be 62% haha
Lol we sure are in some twilight zone. Who knew doctors dressed like that? Maybe all those robes are to hide his...err umm...their diaper rash.
Happy weekend, Pat! You: Twilight Zone, Me: alternate universe ~ either way, these are crazy times! The Star Trek Bones as Jesus meme is my favorite take on the Trump as Jesus meme. I'm such a Trekkie. 😂 Have a great weekend, my friend!
DeleteOh, Louise, you did an absolutely fantastic portrait of Hula Dog! It's a triumph! Well worth all the time and effort you put into it. And I'm glad the Oilers Prayer had a small role to play in all this too, LOL!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Debra! Hula Dog's portrait was definitely a work of love. I think the Oilers Prayer is hilarious. It makes me laugh every time I read it. Enjoy your weekend! Go Oilers! And Avs!
DeleteWow! Your Hula Dog was definitely worth all the love, time, and effort you put into drawing him. Your Bones meme made me laugh, although the heresy from which this came from makes me sick. Thanks for visiting my blog and for your sweet message. Have a blessed weekend!
ReplyDeleteHi, Arnaldo! The heresy makes me sick too. But this trekkie couldn't resist Bones. Blessings to you too!
DeleteOhhhhh I love hula dog. You did an excellent job creating him. I mean right down to the details. The coloring is excellent too. I can see you took time to get him just right. Brova!!!! Glad you are feeling a bit better. Thank you for sharing with FFO and have a lovely weekend
ReplyDeleteThanks, Nicole. Drawing Hula Dog is the funnest thing I've done since returning from Hawaii. Thanks for sponsoring this challenge. Now I have a Hula Dog portrait to hang in my office. Happy weekend!
DeleteCute faces
ReplyDeleteThanks, Christine! I had fun!

ReplyDeleteThanks, Iris! I hope you have a great weekend too!
DeleteMy favourite today
ReplyDeleteThe prayer and the dog art
Thanks for linking yo AFFF
Much love
Thanks, Gillena. I laugh every time I read the prayer, even though I'm a Colorado Avalanche fan. Have a great week!
DeleteDear Louise, I love the hula dog. I agree with Iris. Great approach on this.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Linda! I'm so glad that you like Hula Dog. I hope that you are enjoying a lovely weekend!
Deleteoh I love love your dog drawing! Super sweeeet! Have a lovely weekend!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Maria! I hope that you are enjoying a nice weekend too!
DeleteNice artwork and that's a cute pup. I am so sick of seeing that AI photo of a certain president as Doctor Jesus.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jeff. I was really offended by that meme. But the Star Trek one had Trekkie me in stitches. I'm not RC, but I've been proud of the Pope for how he is standing up for the truth.
DeleteA tender portrait of a well-loved old companion—Hula Dog—capturing both his quiet fatigue and enduring charm.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Roentare! Your comment filled my heart!
DeleteOh I would want to draw Hula Dog too. That's a super drawing Louise. Hula dog is a cutie for certain. And I'm glad to read you're on the mend. Hope you're at 100% soon. Have a wonderful weekend. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteHugs, Erika! Thanks so much!

DeletePrecious friend Louise oh wow you are such a great and wonderfully well organised person
ReplyDeleteYou chose a task and left no corner for mistakes by taking all the precautions 🤗
The result is awesome to incredible 👍♥️
I felt very impressed with how it turned out,his face expressions particularly are the same in original photo which is excellent 🥰
Proud of you dear friend!!! Lots of love and heartfelt best wishes to both of you 🙏♥️
Thank you, Baili! I was inspired by how much I love this little Hula Dog! Much love to you and your family! ❤️❤️❤️
DeleteThe meme sadly reminds me of the leaked photo of George Takei. He may be in his last days or at the very least going through a very rough patch of health.
ReplyDeleteHi, Adam! It's hard to see all my Star Trek heroes so old. Aging is a challenge for sure. Have a great week!
DeleteMy comments on your posts aren't publishing. Are you previewing them before they get published?
DeleteHula dog looks so comfy. Great job with drawing the grid and drawing in scale. Your portrait of him is fabulous, Louise. His eyes are beautiful.

Thanks, Soma! You made my day with your encouraging comment!
DeleteYour so called Hula Dog is a fantastisc drawing. I enjoyed each step here in this post. And I agree, it's many time necessary for good artwork.
ReplyDeleteGreetings by Heidrun ❤️
Hi, Heidrun! Thanks for your kind words. I call the little dog Hula Dog, because I first spotted him at hula shows accompanying his Hula Auntie who was a spectator. Both were decked out in their flower finery. He's a delight. I hope you are having a great day! ❤️
