IWSG: Wednesday, January 2, 2019 ~ Don't Ask!

It's the first Wednesday of the month,
the day that members of the
Insecure Writer's Support Group
share their writing struggles
and writing successes
and offer their encouragement
and support to fellow writers.

To visit the IWSG website, click here.

To become a member of the IWSG, click here.

Our wonderful co-hosts who are volunteering today,
along with IWSG founder Alex Cavanaugh are:
Patricia Lynne,  Lisa Buie-Collard, Kim Lajavardi and me  Fundy Blue!

I hope you have a chance to visit today's hosts and thank them for co-hosting.
I'm sure they would appreciate a visit and an encouraging comment.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Every month the IWSG that members can answer with advice, insight,
a personal experience, or a story in their IWSG posts.
Or, the question can inspire members
if they aren't sure what to write about on IWSG Day.
Remember the question is optional.
This month's featured question is:
What are your favorite and least favorite questions people ask you about your writing?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Happy IWSG Day, Everyone!
I hope that you have had an enjoyable holiday season
and are looking forward to the new year.

Terry and I are traveling, and today we are in Laughlin, Nevada.
I'm holed up our hotel room at the Aquarius ready to make my IWSG rounds.
I told Terry many weeks ago that I was co-hosting the IWSG on January 2nd,
and I didn't care where we were or what we would be doing.
This was my day, regardless!

I cringed when I saw this month's question, especially the least favorite part.
I'm feeling guilty about the writing I didn't get done in December,
so the last thing I want anyone to ask about my writing is
So how's your writing going, Louise?

I never, ever should have emphatically stated last IWSG Day No Excuses!
I started off on a writing roll during the first few days of December,
and then I rolled right off a cliff.
Apparently I did have an excuse for not writing,
because write I did not.

My brother and his wife flew into Phoenix for a week
with Terry and me in Surprise, Arizona.
They have spent much of the last two decades in the Middle East
in Kuwait City, Kuwait and Doha, Qatar,
and I've rarely had a chance to spend time with them.

Thank goodness my husband Terry and my sister-in-law Sue
are good sports and patient,
because Roy and I never shut up,
unless we were battling fiercely at cards.
I adore my brother when we're not locked in competition or debate;
actually I adore him then too.

What a week the four of us had:  swimming, hiking, playing cards,
eating, gambling, sharing memories, debating politics, playing pickleball,
even catching the movie "A Star is Born" one rainy afternoon.
I was heartbroken when we dropped them off
at Sky Harbor International Airport for their flight back to Calgary.

I had so much fun, I didn't want to stop.
After Roy and Sue left, I kept on playing;
and I shirked any sense of adult responsibility.
This girl just wanted to have carefree fun.
So she did.

Right up until December 30th when Terry and I had to pack up,
clean our rental house, and drive to Laughlin
through a snowstorm in the Sonoran and Mojave deserts.

So now it's back to reality.
And my usual least favorite writing question,
one Terry asks me often when I'm writing:
Are you having fun;
are sure this is what you want to do?

Yes, honey, I am.
Just ignore my bald spots from my ripping my hair out.
This is my idea of a good time.

As for my favorite writing question ...
It's any question that causes me to think about and improve the quality of my writing.
I always appreciate honest, insightful, and constructive questions
about whatever I'm writing.

Are you excited to learn the winners of 2018 IWSG Anthology Contest?
I certainly am.
As I write this post, I still don't know who the winners are,
but congratulations to each and every one of them!

I've read and enjoyed all the IWSG anthologies published so far,
and I anticipate delving into the 2018 one with pleasure.

I look forward to visiting around and reading your posts.
I'm always in awe of the talent of IWSG writers.
You inspire me always.
Happy New Year,
and happy writing in 2019!

  1. Greetings Louise. A happy New Year to you. I'm glad you've shared the festivities with your loving family. With editing my poems, I've not touched my novels for a few months, and to get back into them I re-read them - and one is 350 pages so far! I'd love to get some poems published, as when I get asked what I do for a living, I say I'm a poet, then the question arises have I any published! Not as yet, but I've penned over fourteen hundred poems! Glad you enjoyed this season. Blessings to you. Love love, Andrew.

    1. Hey, Alex! You know, I've shouldered adult responsibilities since I was four. That was when I found my very sick and delirious mother asking for porridge, and I went downstair and cooked her some. That scared her enough to rouse her and get help. I've been a loyal, duty-bound trooper ever since, and it felt awesome to shuck it all for a few weeks. Now I'm raring to go. I always enjoy co-hosting. Thanks for the opportunity! 21. Laughlin is not too far from where I live, but I've yet to ever go there. My wife and I have thought about going, but we always end up going to Las Vegas instead. It's probably better if we don't go places that tempt us to throw away money that could be better used for other things. I never win at gambling.

We hit the last snow, thick flurries only, when we went up and started down Union Pass outside Bullhead City. I couldn't believe it. I was just FaceTiming with my brother, and it's warmer in Calgary. It's experiencing a strong, warm chinook right now. I got outside lots in December including swimming many times, so I'm okay with being inside today. When I look out my window across the Colorado River to the Bullhead City skyline, I can feast my eyes on the weirdest, ancient mountain range that I never tire of seeing. Not unlike Terry, my husband has asked me the question about "having fun" and "is this what you want to be doing as well" many times, as I complain about the work and longingly stare outside at sun-drenched yet unreachable scenes. :-)

    Your December looks and sounds like my whole summer and part of the fall, so for me, December was the month to set my teeth into my memoir project again. I'm glad to report that I am actually making some decent progress! But, I'd rather be in the Arizona desert exploring. This fall brought a lot of rain to the area, and the desert around Surprise was lush. Poppies were blooming, as was the brittle bush and some of the cacti. Everything is blooming months ahead of time. It must be an opportunistic, survival thing on the part of desert plants. Here's hoping you get to explore and hike again very soon. Nature always fills my soul and spurs my creativity. Take care!

I spent too much time trying to solve the technical problems and finally had to give up. Of course my poor iCloud is staggering under the weight of 100,000+ photos. Wishing you a very prosperous 2019 and thank you very much for co-hosting.

    1. Thanks, Pat! Arizona is gorgeous. My husband and I have traveled there the several times in the past three years. I never tire of it. We've hit the road and are back inside the Colorado border. I'll have my own bed tomorrow night. I'm like a horse sensing the barn! Wishing you all the best in 2019! Take care!

  45. Thanks for co-hosting! I think your least favorite question will be the most popular least favorite. I've seen it three times now, and I had a variation of it haha. Love the pictures!

    1. It's always a delight to see your name pop up, Kezzie! I don't get by your blog nearly as much as I should, but I often think of you. We're still on the road, after driving the last two days. Home late tomorrow ~ I can't wait! I hope that you and your husband had a lovely Christmas season.

  50. I didn't get much writing done in Dec either, didn't even try while I had family visiting. I think it's good to take a break though and looks like you had a wonderful time. Now it is back to reality indeed! Thanks for co-hosting and Happy New Year!

  55. It looks like you had loads of fun with the family, Louise. The card games look quite intense; a mix of some serious business and camaraderie, which allows for the building of wonderful memories too! Such special moments!
    Happy New Year and thank you for co-hosting the IWSG this month.

    1. Thanks for the kind words, Michelle. I had lots of fun co-hosting, even as I passed through three hotels and three days on the road during the time I wrote, posted, and visited. Sometimes I think life would be easier if I stayed in one place, but I do love to travel. Wishing you all the best in 2019!

    1. Thanks, Christine! I do love to travel. I've been retired for a while now, and I can't get beyond traveling, photography, and writing. I imagined I'd being doing many more things, but it turns out that these passions crowd out everything else. I guess that 's not a bad problem to have! LOL Have a great rest of the week!

    I don't get asked writing questions...well, I guess it is because I mostly write in secret. Like an agent. Yeah. That's it.

  58. Hello dear Louise,
    Many thanks for your comments and your unconditional friendship although I am not much on the blogosphere anymore since I travel so much!
    If you want to see a Goliath heron or any animal of the wildlife in Africa, is there a chance I could take you to the Okavango delta in Botswana one day?
    I am taking a group of 6 people in April and opening another 12 days trip in November....????
    Got to run again.... but keep well and warm hugs from France :)

  59. I can imagine your joy and fun you guys had together dear Louise as i can see the excitement and love through these very beautiful images :)

    you guys look so happy and complete together
    your obsession with card playing made me smile after they left

    when we are stuck in family business it is hard to participate in writing competitions and this is the only one reason i find myself so helpless when someone ask me to join some writing group as you did many times (for which i feel so grateful)

    i can understand that such questions can make one feel bad .
    i am happy that you have such supporting family so you can write easily

    wishing you best of luck for each task you are upto my dear friend!

    hugs and more blessings to you and family!
