When you set out to write a story, do you try to be more original or do you try to give readers what they want?

Happy August, Everyone!
I'm writing this well in advance, because I have no clue
what I'll be doing on August's IWSG Day.
I anticipate being in Nova Scotia Nova Scotia visiting my family,
including two sisters I haven't seen since before the pandemic.
Who knows what fun things we'll be doing together on August 3rd?
If I can visit around, I will.
If I can't, I'll see you in September.

My short answer to this month's question is I write the story that reveals itself to me.
I usually start with an image of a setting, or a snippet of conversation, or an emotion I feel.
Then I write to discover what it is that is trying to come out.
I don't think about being original or what readers want.
I think about what the story wants.

Happy writing in August!
Enjoy your visit. I like your approach to writing. It shows integrity.
ReplyDeleteWhat the story wants - that's probably a good way to do it.
ReplyDeleteHave a great time with your family!
I hope you're having fun! I like what you said and agree, "I write the story that reveals itself to me."

Great that you focus on what the story wants. I hope you're having a great visit with your family that you haven't seen since COVID.
ReplyDeleteI like your answer and envious of your trip. I've been to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland once and want to go back. I'd love to take my sea kayak, as the coastline there looks wonderful (although in places in NL, it could be dangerous with the mixing of the Gulf Stream and Lavender currents).
ReplyDeleteI hope you're having a blast in Nova Scotia, Louise!
ReplyDeleteHope you're enjoying what looks to be a wonderful family vacay!! The pictures are gorgeous. You are forgiven for being off having fun (said with raging jealousy!). See ya in September!
ReplyDeleteI hope you're in NS enjoying family, the wonderful weather, and lots of great food. I miss NS very much. There is no place quite like it.
ReplyDeletegreat advice - “write what the story wants” and love the pictures! such great adventures!

I like that approach--start with a snippet and see what wants to be revealed. Cleve,r that.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to have such a family and be able to see them again. Hope August is wonderful in Nova Scotia.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you are visiting your sisters after so long apart!
ReplyDeleteDo readers know what they want?
ReplyDeleteYes
And
No
It sounds lovely, spending time with family. Enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteBest way to be indeed. Just let the story take you where it wants. Hopefully you are in NS and enjoying it!
