Life's Little Mysteries

Last Thursday morning I trudged groggily out to the kitchen to find some coffee
(stuffed to the gills with cold medicine and Tylenol).
I found a pile of socks on my kitchen counter.

Did I miss some of the socks when I was folding the laundry last night? I thought.

Last Thursday Morning

I put them away.

Sometime late Friday morning,
I trudged groggily out to the kitchen to find some coffee
(stuffed to the gills with cold medicine and Tylenol).

There was another pile of socks in the middle of the counter.
What?!

Last Friday Morning

I put them away.

Sometime even later Saturday morning,
I trudged groggily out to the kitchen to find some coffee
(stuffed to the gills with cold medicine and Tylenol).

No socks!
Whew!

Sometime late Sunday morning,
I trudged groggily out to the kitchen to find some coffee
(stuffed to the gills with cold medicine and Tylenol).
I had forgotten all about socks.

Sometime even later on Monday morning,
I trudged groggily out to the kitchen to find some coffee
(stuffed to the gills with cold medicine and Tylenol).

What?!
The socks were back!

Did Terry do laundry yesterday?
NOT!  The football playoffs were on all day.
How many games did he watch yesterday anyway?

Monday Morning

I called Terry's office.
He didn't answer by the third ring.

I hung up.
He must be really busy! I thought.
I didn't feel like exchanging pleasantries with someone answering the phone for him.
I couldn't do much more than croak anyway.

I put the socks away.

Sometime even later on Tuesday morning,
I trudged groggily out to the kitchen to find some coffee
(stuffed to the gills with cold medicine and Tylenol).

You have got to be kidding me!
More socks!
What the hell is goin' on?!

I'm going to get to the bottom of this tonight!!!
I swore as I put the socks away.

Tuesday Morning

Tuesday evening was not a good evening.
I was completely out of it,
so Terry made me Chicken Soup for the Soul.
That's what he called it when he put the bowl in front of me and said, "Eat!"

Terry had gone all out!
Not only had he heated up the can of chicken soup,
but he'd chopped up and added in a leftover cooked chicken breast
that he'd found in the back of the fridge!

Chicken soup never tasted so good!!
I ate it and trudged back to bed.
I didn't even remember the socks.

Sometime a little earlier on Wednesday morning,
I trudged groggily out to the kitchen to find some coffee
(stuffed to the gills with cold medicine and Tylenol).

Oh come on!
More fiddlesticks socks!!
What the hell is goin' on?!

Tonight I will get to the bottom of this!!!
I swore as I put the socks away.

Wednesday Morning.

Terry came home after work.
I was much perkier.
It must have been the Chicken Soup for the Soul.

I pounced!  The croaking phase had passed.
"What's with the socks?
Every morning I come out, and there's a new pile of socks on the kitchen counter!
The kitchen counter!!
It's driving me crazy!!!
I keep calling your office to ask about the damn socks!
But you're too busy to answer the phone!!
I keep putting the socks away, and every morning MORE socks show up!!!
What the hell is goin' on with the socks?!!!!"

I had worked myself up into quite a lather.

The Ever-Patient Terry put the mail down on the counter,
turned to me,
and very calmly and quietly said:
"Honey."
He paused.

"The reason there are socks on the counter every morning
is because I don't want to disturb you."
Pause.

"You've been having such a tough time getting to sleep and staying asleep
with your cold and all that coughing,
that I don't want to wake you up in the morning
by turning on the light to look for socks."
Pause.

This is a very long speech for Terry.
He goes on to say calmly and quietly:
"I just grab a pile of socks out of the drawer,
go the kitchen, put them on the counter, and find a pair to wear."

Is the E-P not just the sweetest hubby on the face of this Earth?!!

Sometime even a little earlier this morning,
I trudged groggily out to the kitchen to find some coffee
(not quite so stuffed with cold medicine and Tylenol).

And there was another pile of socks!

This Morning

Just another love note from the greatest guy on Earth!

Hopefully, by tomorrow morning,
Terry won't have to leave socks on the kitchen counter.

    2. Hee Hee, Jim!
That means you recognized those grade three storytelling techniques!
      Thanks for the kind comments!
I made it to the Pompeii exhibit this morning!
      I'm not 100% - but I'm way better.
More Pompeii posts on the way.
      Have a great weekend!

I will feel forever differently about socks! T is a total sweetheart!

Now that the holidays are out of the way and I'm on the mend, I can't wait to tackle everything in the new year. Very high on my list is checking out those photo editing sites you recommended. It's going to be so much fun!

I'm meeting Terry at Parkway for Friday Night Date Night in a couple of hours. I can't wait! It will be a short date, but I won't have to cook dinner! Yes!

I hope you and Jim and, of course Sophie, are looking forward to a fun weekend.

    1. Thanks Martha!
Yes, it is wonderful to be cared for this much!
T has taken great care of me. He is very happy I am on the mend!
Now to deal with everything that has piled up! This is not overwhelming in the least because I am retired.
I kept thinking about how I would have been going in to teach sick, and how difficult and miserable that would be.
      Thanking my lucky stars!
      Have a great weekend!

My T is the best! He is an amazingly thoughtful guy - and such a rock when I need him.
Stay warm this weekend - it's supposed to get very cold.
I managed to get to and from the museum earlier today without hitting the "snow flurries." From the look of the roads, it was doing a little more than flurrying while I was in the Pompeii exhibit!
      Enjoy your weekend!

  6. What a wonderful show of love.....I LOVE THAT! And I also love your story-telling abilities. You're really good! Sorry to hear you were under the weather....I was also stuffed to the gills with medicine, etc on Monday & Tuesday....I think it was the express flu because it only lasted two days. Glad to hear yours has finally passed as well! Thanks for sharing this adorable story!!!

    1. Thank you for the warm comments, Audrey!
I'm glad that you only had the express flu - everyone around here is getting sick for one to two weeks!
I'm new at blogging, and I'm really working on my writing skills, so your encouraging comments about my story-telling meant so much!
Have a great weekend with your family!

  7. Hi Louise, its Barb - I love your story ... but you know me (LOL) - why didn't Terry put the unchosen socks back in the dresser ... or ... better yet, put a whole pile of socks in the spare bedroom and be done with it ... I know, I know, I just don't get this love and marriage stuff:D

    1. Hey Barb!
Your comment is too funny. Terry probably didn't put the socks back in the dresser because he might wake me doing so. But the spare bedroom idea? That is brilliant! I'll have to suggest it, if this issue comes up again.
Don't work too hard this weekend! I hope that looming deadline isn't weighing too heavily.
      I'll call you this weekend.
Calgary is a go, so I need to nail down the details.

  8. Hi Louise, it's Barb, I'm glad I made you laugh! Terry is a great guy, which is why I love to tease :) I'm thrilled that Calgary is a go - I've notified the Sibs and they are already making plans. We will definitely have to plan a get together with the newlyweds.
    Cheers,
    Barb

  9. You really got me laughing my head off with that story!
Quite typical of us women getting all worked up to understand what de H... is going on with a bizarre situation!
By the way, maybe Terry reads your posts........... at work!
Have you ever thought of that?????? LOL!!!!!
Can't stop laughing! Thanks for that, Fundy!
    Enjoy your Sunday!

  10. I'm glad that you enjoyed the post, Noushka!
I had so much fun writing it and photographing the socks.
Terry is now checking my posts regularly and scanning the written parts.
I think he's worried what I might say about him!
He'll just have to trust that I would never be unkind in writing about him -
or anyone else, for that matter.
    Have a good weekend!

  11. This is the sweetest story I've ever heard.! My husband would have left them there for me to hopefully wash or mate....(the socks)......or at least to use as a nose mitten.

...and the soup as well....major points!

I'm glad that you enjoyed my story. My hubby is a sweetie, and I am very fortunate to have him share my life.
I've only been blogging since October (except for my first post in August), and it is so encouraging to hear when someone enjoys a post.
    Have a good day!
